There is quite a bit of conversation going on about renewable energy, wood and pellet fueled heating, and how to get the general public to make the switch. Last week, we talked about Maryland's incentive to pellet heating. This week, we are sharing with you how the state of Maine has joined in.
The Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection has been directed by the state legislature to establish a Residential Wood and Pellet Stove Replacement and Rebate Program to replace older model wood burning stoves and pellet stoves with newer efficient models.
According to a DEP spokeswoman, there will be a 30-day comment period before the rule is enacted. Once established, the fund will provide $450 towards the purchase of an EPA-certified wood or pellet stove and $700 for LIHEAP recipients.
The spokeswoman did say that any business that violates clean air standards in the state could be fined and that fine could go towards funding the program. Stay tuned for more in the next episode of "As Augusta Turns."
